Back from the Geneticist....

Just a little update! We went to see Cole's geneticist today. The last time we saw her was when she diagnosed Cole at 5 days old. It was a really good visit! We got lots of good information from her. She thought that Cole was doing really well and looked great! If he continues to follow the growth pattern that he is on now he could potentially reach 4'9" which is really good! The average achondroplastic dwarf male reaches between 4' and 4'4" so for him to get a few extra inches would make things a little easier in life. I guess, at 4'8" you don't need pedal extenders to drive, so if Cole can make it to that height then driving would be easier. For those that don't know what pedal extenders are, they are exactly what they sound like. You can add a device to your gas and brake pedals that extend them so that they are the right length for you legs. Cole also got some blood work done. They are going to test his blood to see what exact mutation he has of achondroplasia. This could help him later on and it will help us to see if we are carriers of the gene. Our doctor seems to think that we aren't carriers, but we just want to know. Also, she scheduled Cole for a sleep study to make sure he is getting enough oxygen at night. We are all pretty sure he is, but double checking doesn't hurt! That will be on February 28th and we have to stay all night at a hospital for this to be done.
On a side note, while at the office a lady passed us on her way out and asked us what Cole had. I guess, since we were at a genetics office it was a pretty standard question. I felt so thankful that this was the condition that Cole has. Her poor son has the same mutated gene, but with a twist. His caused craniofacial abnormalities. Which means that he had very apparent facial deformities. Just seeing that poor baby made me see that there is always someone in life a little worse off than you. My husband looked at me and said how thankful he is for Cole! We both are!!

I'm so happy you guys got some good news. It's soooooo true that a little good news goes a long way!

And I can also relate about your bumping into another person who's gone through something simular, yet seems to have even more issues. It does make you feel better that things could still be even more difficult. On the flip side, we try out best to lead as possitive a life as we can given our circumstances so other's can see that even with some challenges in life, there's still so much to look forward to.
Cole's a luckly boy to have you guys as parents!

Yay! God is so good! Cole, I am only 4'11" and have always been small. I was always the shortest person in my class, but that can be a good thing, too! Remember that dynamite comes in small packages. :))) God made you very special just how you are. I love you! Love, Jenny
